Weekly Round – Up: 9/29 – 10/5

“The Lighthouse” (2019) coming Oct. 18

The Lighthouse (2019), Robert Eggers‘ latest film, seems to feature only two characters: Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe. Set at a lighthouse in Maine, the film’s plot is somewhat elusive; the trailer looks creepy and gritty. It appears the two men are trying to survive a storm, but I suspect there may be sinister forces at work other than the ocean. The film has received rave reviews thus far, and I cannot wait to see it when it’s released on Oct. 18.

“Knives Out” to be released Nov. 27

Speaking of strange but intriguing movies… What film cobbles together a cast that include Daniel Craig, Toni Collette, Chris Evans, LaKeith Stanfield, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, AND Christopher Plummer? The answer is Rian Johnson‘s Knives Out (2019), which looks an awful lot like a murder mystery but appears fun and almost playful rather than dark and serious. Add to that a wonderful cast playing a diverse array of roles and you get a film rogerebert.com called “one of the most purely entertaining films in years.”

All the Jokers, ranked

Todd Philips‘s Joker (2019) is released today and has already generated a lot of discussion and controversy about its possible implications and impacts. I’m looking forward to seeing the movie, not only to form my own opinion about it, but also to see how Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker compares to other actors playing the Joker in years past. So, before seeing the newest film, take a look at The New York Times‘ ranking of all the performances of the Joker; then, we can see where Phoenix fits on the list.
